What is 5Rhythms® Movement Psychotherapy?

5Rhythms® Movement Psychotherapy is a practice where we explore patterns of movement within ourselves to develop awareness of how these patterns move outside of our bodies in all the realms of our lives. So within . . . so without.

Simple movement patterns can elegantly express and articulate physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual possibilities in profoundly catalytic, personal, and lasting ways that traditional 'talk therapy' cannot approach. It can evoke powerful and sustainable change/movement via a deeply-felt experience of who we are in any moment.

5Rhythms® Movement Psychotherapy helps us discover, listen to and follow our deepest truths. We give total permission to express what we genuinely notice and feel in the body and heart. From that place of truth we discover and explore who we really are in that moment, without question, judgment or criticism. From this state of being, we can integrate our physical, emotional and mental selves to become a person of spiritual integrity. We can stop the mental gymnastics and confusion of behaving in ways that go against our ideas, beliefs and values. Our deepest truths are not found within the intellect but within the body, heart and spirit. We can stop the enslavement of our heart to the mind and shift the power of the mind to serve the heart. Thus we can act in integrity.

5Rhythms® Movement Psychotherapy has a philosophical framework which includes the 5Rhythms® Dance, Gestalt Awareness Practice and Integrative Body Psychotherapy.

Life is first and foremost a somatic/feeling experience. For psychotherapy to be effective, each intellectual insight must have an "inside" awakening, an interior somatic awareness. To embody life's knowledge we must know how to listen to our somatic intelligence.

Without essential somatic intelligence, emotional and behavioral patterns do not change appreciably. Psychotherapy becomes endless statements of disembodied intellectual explanations of the "whys" of life.

The why's of life will remain only intellectual until a sound foundation of somatic identity, a core experience of self, has been established in the body; effective psychological mental health skills have been mastered; and contemplative tools for exploring the existential-transpersonal aspects of life have been acquired.

Movement Psychotherapy can assist with the common issues that people come to see a counselor for. Issues such as:

  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Substance Misuse/Addiction
  • Self-Esteem
  • Relationships/Couples
  • Career/Life Transitions
  • Grief and Loss
  • Emotion Management (Anger/Violence)

Due to its integrating, body-oriented and relational nature it is especially effective for:

Because of its holistic approach it is ideal for:

  • Positive Psychology/Personal Growth (Positive psychology is a recent branch of psychology that studies the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive. Positive psychology seeks to find and nurture genius and talent and to make normal life more fulfilling, not to cure mental illness.)
  • Spiritual Development
